1. Problem Definition (The Core Challenge)
Munch Citi was envisioned as a vibrant mobile platform that bridges the gap between food truck enthusiasts and independent operators across the Greater Los Angeles area. While food trucks consistently draw passionate crowds, there was no unified, user-friendly way for locals to discover nearby trucks in real time, explore reviews and menus, and for owners to manage their presence and customer engagement.
Key Challenge
The platform needed to deliver two distinct yet complementary experiences — an intuitive discovery tool for users seeking new culinary adventures, and a robust owner portal that empowers truck operators to promote their location, interact with customers, and grow their business — all without overwhelming either audience.
2. User and Business Goals (The "Jobs to Be Done")
Using a real-world scenario framework, we defined the core tasks Munch Citi needed to help both sides of the marketplace complete:
Discover Culinary Experiences: Users needed a fast, enjoyable way to find food trucks near them, browse menus and reviews, and plan spontaneous meals.
Share Feedback and Photos: Food lovers wanted to contribute recommendations and photos to help others make creative dining decisions.
Boost Visibility for Owners: Operators needed a way to effortlessly update real-time truck locations and hours so hungry customers could always find them.
Drive Community Engagement: Both users and owners needed features that fostered two-way interaction — from owner responses to reviews to users returning for new experiences.
For Munch Citi, meeting these goals meant creating a discovery platform that not only helped users explore and celebrate local cuisine, but also supported owner success — strengthening the local food ecosystem.
3. Design and Strategy Approach (How I Solved It)
To address the goals above, we structured the experience around two main user journeys with clarity and usability at the forefront:
User Experience (Food Truck Fans):
Designed an easy-to-navigate mobile interface where users can discover trucks via a map or list view.
Integrated ratings, detailed reviews, and image galleries so users could make confident choices on what to try next.
Ensured search and filter features let users tailor their food exploration to mood, cuisine, or location.
Owner Experience (Truck Operators):
Built an owner portal that allows operators to update their truck’s location, schedules, and hours in real time.
Added customer engagement tools so owners could view feedback, respond to reviews, and build loyalty.
Designed intuitive dashboards that made daily updates fast and hassle-free.
Scenario-Driven Interactions:
Mapped key user scenarios (e.g., discovering a weekend food festival or posting a review after a meal) to ensure each interaction felt purposeful, delightful, and clear.
4. Impact (The Results)
Munch Citi delivered measurable improvements across both user satisfaction and business outcomes:
Stronger Local Discovery: Users quickly gained a reliable way to explore unique food offerings around Los Angeles, turning spontaneous cravings into memorable outings.
Owner Growth and Visibility: By enabling accurate real-time listings and engagement tools, food truck operators reported increased foot traffic during peak and off-peak hours.
Community Engagement: Review sharing and photo uploads helped build a more interactive local food community, encouraging return visits and viral recommendations among users.
Ecosystem Support: Ultimately, the platform fostered a more connected and economically robust local food truck ecosystem across Greater Los Angeles.
5. Reflection & Learnings (What I Took Away)
This project reinforced the value of designing with clear dual-user goals in mind. When two distinct user groups – consumers and business owners – interact within the same platform, simplicity and clarity become even more critical.
For future iterations, greater personalization (like custom recommendations based on past visits) and expanded owner analytics could further elevate engagement and long-term platform growth.
